Curtis Miles
Curtis Miles was a Black American physician who volunteered with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Maryland while completing his medical residency. The organization matched him with Logan Weston during Logan’s elementary-school years. Their formal match continued until Curtis completed residency and moved out of state, after which they maintained contact across the distance.
Medical Training and Mentorship
Curtis was a medical resident when he became Logan’s Big Brother. He maintained the match despite the demands of residency and met with Logan consistently through the remainder of Logan’s elementary-school years.
Curtis took Logan to museums, coding workshops, and comic-book stores. These outings gave Logan places where his intellectual interests were welcomed during years when he experienced severe bullying and isolation at school.
After Curtis completed residency and moved out of state, the formal Big Brothers Big Sisters match ended. Curtis and Logan remained in contact.
Personality
Curtis was patient, kind, reliable, and openly nerdy. He accepted Logan’s intensity and sensitivity without treating either quality as a problem to correct.
Cultural Identity and Heritage
Curtis was Black American. As a Black medical resident, he gave Logan an example of Black adulthood that joined professional achievement, kindness, intellectual curiosity, and authenticity.
Significant Relationships
Logan Weston
Curtis became Logan’s Big Brother after Julia Weston enrolled her son in Big Brothers Big Sisters during the bullying Logan experienced at his gifted academy. Curtis’s consistent presence did not end the bullying, but it gave Logan an adult relationship in which his interests and personality were accepted.
During his own senior year of high school, Logan became a Big Brother to Dion. Logan approached that mentorship using the same principles of consistency and acceptance that he had experienced with Curtis.
